So once the surface has been prepped, what do you do? Well, one of the most popular finishing touches these days is known as a knockdown texture, and we love it for so many reasons.
Let’s talk about why. It not only creates a more intense look than a simple flat finish, but it can also quickly hide small flaws in the construction of your walls.
This means you’ll have the look of a well-done and modern abode, but with a much more reasonable construction cost. This is largely due to the time saved by avoiding all the expense of sanding and having to prime the drywall before being able to apply the final paint color.
The secret lies in the consistency of the joint compound itself, requiring a certain amount of water in the mix to create a thinner type of material rather than a thick paste. After that, a trowel is used to apply this compound onto the wall.
During this process, small spikes will naturally form that are then knocked off the surface with a scraping tool. This creates the mottled finish we all know so well. Our personal favorite way of creating this effect is by using a specific type of texture mud that is sprayed on with a machine that uses an attached compressor and a hopper full of the “mud.”
The benefit is less shrinkage when drying. This is also known as a splatter coat, and only requires being quickly skimmed with a large plastic knife after the team sprays it, thus saving even more time! Some finishes can be applied with a brush, but it all depends on the patterns desired. Cleaning is another thing we do well, and we promise never to leave a mess behind.
Another popular surfacing method is known as orange peel texture. this is mostly used on walls, though theoretically it could be used for any place you’d like. We personally prefer smooth walls with a single accent wall in a bright color with an interesting textured paint to call attention, but it’s up to you!
And we’re more than happy to sit down and come up with some ideas, using platforms such as Pinterest to brainstorm your interior design concept. Once we sketch out the details, we just schedule a time to show up with our tools, work clothes and texture rollers and get to work!
And while we may have just spent the last few paragraphs talking about all the different types of different textures we can apply, we can also do things like removing them. After that, you get to decide if you want to keep it smooth or replace it with another style! On top of all of that, there’s even a skim coat we can do. As you can see, we give you options.
Oh, and if you just want to cover up something that’s already there? Well, we can certainly do that as well! Give us a call, we’ll grab a sponge, throw our work boots on and come straight there! Sometimes the only problem is a little scratch or maybe an area that has taken a nice little knock. In this case, we can also patch or even repair the finish on your sheetrock. If there’s a boo boo, we can fix it!
So stop worry about the best way to remove things like spackle and popcorn, give us a call and let us do the hard work for you! Getting rid of rough or damaged surfaces is our specialty, and there’s nothing we love more than looking at a smooth, well done work space. Oh, and asbestos? Yeah, don’t mess with that stuff, man. It’s way too dangerous to simply grab a scraper and go at it, protect your health!
